Spiral 03:34
How long is this road That we travel on And how far Will this journey go On the road This endless road How long till I come up for air Relentless pull Tugging at my feet Descending down But how far to go Where do we go Where do we go It seems an endless spiral Full of pitfalls and rivals Not neat and linear as you'd hoped One step and you know it Don't you A pause when it feels it's due The destination shifts as we go How long is this road

There's a lot to be said for being on your own And learning who you are once again But after a while you can feel all along 'Specially when the long nights draw in So I thought it was time to open my heart And learn how to love once again Took me by surprise: such an immediate start But now I know I'm ready to begin 'cause Straight away, just like that Is how it happened The first time we met I fell hard Oh I fell for you And I couldn't believe my luck when I met you You tick all the boxes yeah all at once All at once, my all-in-one boy There's a lot to be said for taking it slow And letting things grow in their own time But my heart's at a green light and I'm rarin' to go And boy you know, I'm gonna make you mine 'cause Straight away, just like that Is how it happened The first time we met I fell hard Oh I fell for you And I couldn't believe my luck when I met you You tick all the boxes yeah all at once All at once, my all-in-one boy Well I've made up my mind I know what I'm gonna do You've lit a fire inside And I'm coming I'm coming Yeah I'm coming for you, 'cause Straight away, just like that Is how it happened The first time we met I fell hard Oh I fell for you And I couldn't believe my luck when I met you You tick all the boxes yeah all at once All at once, my all-in-one boy

Been taking my time  Beating the blue No, it didn’t feel quite right Then there was you Sweet inspiration Sent my two minds into negotiation The issue this time: what am I to do Now they say start as you mean to go on And that’s what I do  Wondering about one, then there were two One comes out of left field  When your eyes were on the right And all the while I’m singing a new kind of blue Is it him, or what he brings that caused this Is this it, or was it there to start with But as I write the words, The ghost already heard The thread won’t come just like it used to do Oh, taking my time Breaking in these new shoes  You know it feels just right When I’m singing my new blue But still… anticipation  And the highs and lows of faux liberation I’ve got the taking my time, uncertainty blue

Journey On 03:44
In books on my shelves stories begin and end Neatly they’re bound and stacked away We can move on beyond last page Journey on with me Dreams just like hearts fall apart easily Grasping onto what could have been Our story won’t lie stagnantly Journey on with me Choose the fire and rain Find rainbows on stormy days Colour outside the page Without shades of gray Whisper the words too difficult to say Shout to the wind those that shouldn’t stay Weave your voice to join my refrain Journey on with me Weave your voice to join my refrain Journey on with me

about

For their self-titled debut EP, Juniper Three have created a stripped-back, intimate record that gives the feel of a live session. Simplicity is key, with the trio’s lush, seamless harmonies very much front and centre.

The theme of the record is three strands coming together to create a whole. The first track, Spiral, was a group collaboration, while the other three songs were previously written by each individual.

Spiral was through-composed by Aimee, Outi and Laura, weaving circular, close harmonies which mirror the lyrics: a reflection on the cyclical nature of life and an exploration of central themes of Maureen Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey model.

Straight Away, the most upbeat track on the EP, adds a pop element with a twist with its catchy chromatic chorus and repeating piano melodic hook. Laura and Outi's instinctive backing vocals compliment the lead melody, adding a rich underlay to the sound. Written during Aimee's return to her hometown and experience of living on her own for the first time, the lyrics describe the rush of unexpected attraction when least looking for it.

New Kind of Blue, a southern soul-infused musing on indecision in life and love, was written (some years ago) by Laura after part of the melody and lyrics came to her in a dream. Outi and Aimee’s Franklin sisters-flavoured backing vocals add an extra spark of vintage magic to the track.

Journey On was penned by Outi and draws inspiration from the Elvis hit Can’t Help Falling In Love. In contrast to so many songs about a budding relationship, the piece exudes warmth as it reflects upon the quarrels and comforts of a lasting romance. As soon as Aimee and Laura heard the song, they joined in with celestial harmonies that felt like they’d always been there.
